Personal Journal!

YES!!! 31 Days, the eve of April, KISS KISS HUG HUG to all you beauties who are juicing or not juicing, but who are here with us while we ARE JUICING!! We love you all.

Can you believe it is April tomorrow? I had such a beautiful closing to March today, a day full of sunshine and bliss. Did I mention LOVE?

A busy day, we went into Nogales to do chores and get more produce (we neglected to put in our order for greens with Red Mountain) We are also looking for a couch and so we went into a part of Nogales that we have only been to ONCE in the whole time we have lived here, such hermits are we! It is really the best part of the lovely little border town, and I am embarrassed to say that usually when we go into to Nogales we only attend the outskirts where there is a Safeway and the bank plopped in with all the other horrible big box stores. It was like going to an exciting new town, full of new discoveries and enchanting corners. Downtown Nogales, where it feels like a Mexican town complete with the central park where every bench is full with resting and visiting beautiful people of all ages, colors, and shapes. We checked out several thrift shops but didn’t find the couch of our dreams BUT we found a BIKINI for me.

My Bikini Story:

After my whole life of feeling uncomfortable in a bathing suit (well, I most likely didn’t when I was 10 and younger, but I was mostly an Island girl skinny dipper for those years) I put on a BIKINI today and felt FANTASTIC!! Not too long ago I hated wearing even shorts and tank tops because of the condition of my thighs and upper arms. This is truly a gift, for a time I honestly believed I would never want to wear shorts again, let alone a bikini.

So, at the beginning of this Juice Feast I told David how I felt about bathing suits and he said “well, if you want we will go and get you a really nice bathing suit at the end of the Juice Feast.” That sounded nice. But I didn’t have to wait until the end, and the best part, my new bathing suit cost $1.50!! I didn’t even try it on in the store, figuring for a buck fifty that it wasn’t much of a risk, and lo and behold it fits perfectly! I love thrift stores!!

Other wonderful things to report: I had three BMs today!! No enema but stuff certainly came forth! I discovered a file on David’s computer containing many of the photos that died with my old hard-drive, including the photo above of my sister and I. We are getting so many wonderful stories from all the Juice Feasters out there! I was able for the first time in a year and three months to listen to my music from my previous life, life before David, without it making me feel very, very sad and nostalgic. I got to have a long visit with my sister Heather on the phone tonight, and feel so close to here despite the distance of land between us. I LOVE Arizona!
We found a new grocery store where citrus is dirt cheep (although it is not organic, and does not taste nearly as good as organic, so I don’t know how often we will be going there).

Full Disclosure: I have been ODing on bee pollen. How much? Oh, about 5 TBS per day!! Too much. I have also been getting very bloated in the afternoon and evening, and I finally noticed yesterday that it was almost right after I ate bee pollen (with out putting it in to a juice, about 3 TBS at once) that I began to feel painfully bloated. So today I decided it was time to stop eating bee pollen on its own, and I only had 1 TBS in a juice, and voila, no bloating! I feel SO much better!! This does not happen to me with pollen when I am eating, so I think that is why it took me a while to catch on. I am Juice Feasting right now, not pollen feasting!!

I have been having really good results with adding in green superfoods (mostly Vitamineral Green) to my fruit juices, feel much more balanced. I have also been taking the Flora Flax/DHA oil daily and have had nice, juicy WET eyes every morning since starting that! I don’t know if I have mentioned it yet, but I have had painfully dry eyes in the morning for quite some time. Sometimes it is better than others, and it is definitely better eating RAW than it was pre-rawification, but oh how nice to wake up with WET, comfotable eyes!! DHA is very good for eye health. I’ve also been adding MSM to all my citrus juice, getting in 3 TBS a day and I feel very good on this dose. Flexibility and yummy skin are the most noticeable.

I think that is it for the March round up, I’ll see you all tomorrow!!

With love and peaceful steps,

Your Questions:

I was wondering... I don't know if this has ever been asked before but: "Is there such a thing as "too much juice" on the juice feast?" I totally had 9 Litres of juice the other day... and I've consistently been doing around 8 litres/day lately. I don't know what's wrong with me... can't get enough juice! :)

Lots of love :)

- Ben

PS: I'm teaching a raw-cooking class 2 weeks after the end of my juice feast! too cool eh?? :) Awesome things are happening while on this juice feast... it's amazing! :)

We Say:

Hi Ben!

So glad to hear that wonders are occurring for you while Juice Feasting!

No, there is no such thing as too much juice on a Juice Feast. Your body is asking for it, and if you are feeling good drinking that much, by all means, drink up!! There is nothing wrong with you. You have been Feasting for quite some time now, and your body is quite able to tell you what it needs at this point.

Lot of love to you!!

Another Question:

Blessings David/Katrina,

I am losing weight (whoo hoo!!), feeling great!

Two Questions:

1. After the Feast will I regain the weight lose once I return to solid raw foods diet (seeds, nuts, mylks, raw sweets) etc?

2. Will mucous return once seed mylks & other raw food are reintroduced?
If yes, can I stop it from happening and how? Are their certain foods to avoid?

Much Gratitiude for your advice

-Kierra

We Say:

Hello Kierra

Congratulations on feeling great! We are so happy to hear this, and we feel great too over here in Arizona on Day 30!

These are very common thoughts while Juice Feasting that you have addressed. We often tell our students not to think too much about what they are going to eat after their Juice Feast, because you will really be in a different space. That being said, it can help to look ahead as well, just remember, your body will be different and will be asking for different foods.

1. Once you move back into solid foods, your weight maintenance will depend on HOW you eat a raw food diet. Of course, most of us do not stay as slim as we are while Juice Feasting if we are able to Juice Feast down to our ideal weight, but this is OK. Others who still have weight to loose after 92 Days are able to continue to loose weight doing what we now call The Four Means To Get Your Greens. David has created a very simple yet yummy raw food cuisine that he has called The Four Means To Get Your Greens. Look for the book coming out soon, it will be the ultimate post-Juice Feast raw food book! This is how we encourage all of our students to eat post-Juice Feast, and it is how David and I eat and we both feel very healthy and happy eating this way.

The Four Means insures that we get in 1-2 lbs of nutrient dense, leafy greens in every day, which insures that we don’t emotionally or physiologically feel the need to over-eat fat and sweet. Leafy greens are VERY IMPORTANT!! Greens are very balancing.

So, what are the Four Means? 1. Salad 2. Smoothie 3. Soup 4. Juice. Eat your greens in a salad, blend them into a yummy green smoothie with fruits and berries, blend them into a savory soup, or juice them. Then in addition you can add in minimal nuts and seeds, avocados, fruits, vegetables, sea vegetables, flax crackers, superfoods, etc. David and I very, very rarely prepare or eat dehydrated foods or fancy prepared raw entrees.

Other things to consider are exercise and creating a healthy relationship with food.

Moving your body with some form of exercise is vital to balancing your appetite, balancing hormones, getting a good nights sleep, creating a detoxifying sweat, building calorie burning muscles, and releasing endorphins that will make you feel happy and content. Endorphins are your body’s natural, morphine like chemicals that boost mood and produce feelings of euphoria and satisfaction. Ways to access these lovely endorphins other than food are exercise, meditation, Tai Chi, calming music, yoga, deep breathing, prayer, laughter, flowing dancing, and pleasurable experiences.

If you have not had a healthy relationship with food in the past, look at working on that now. Juice Feasting is a wonderful time for healing the emotional imbalances and turmoil that often leads us to over eat and eat less than the best foods. Often when we eat to sooth emotions we are looking to balance our emotional state, either to bring our mood up with sweets or to bring our intense experiences down a notch by dulling our selfs with heavy foods. There are many ways of doing this without food, please go on a treasure hunt for the ways that resonates with you most strongly!

Personally, I have found that the mindfulness practices of Thich Nhat Hanh, journaling, meditation, self-love, and exercise along with getting in lots of greens, have all created a state of abundant well being and health for me!!

You might also want to check out this lovely blog post by Melissa, who we are so happy to have back with us in Blogland!!

2. After your Juice Feast adding in nuts and seeds will not re-create mucous as long as you are doing them in moderation. Also, if you eat your nuts and seeds with leafy greens mid-day (when your digestion is strongest) this will help. See your mucous as a wonderful indication of how much fat you are eating! If you get all stuffed up after a day of eating too many nuts (as I tend to do), you can say to yourself “wonderful, I ate too many nuts and fat yesterday, today I will re-focus on getting in lots of greens!”

To further inspire you, here is a note from a Juice Feaster who has been eating her greens!

Hi David & Katrina-my favorite Dynamic Duo!

I want to thank you again for creating this amazing opportunity for people to cleanse, heal and gain back their god-given health. I'm definitely a proud green evangelist ;D

I've been experimenting with Four Means To Get My Greens daily since ending my Juice Feast. I've really re-set my body after all those greens I drank during the JF. I love that I eat simpler and healthier after only 8 days of JF. Truly amazing transformation can occur on JF.

In the mornings, I'm still continuing the quart of water with lemon and MSM powder then follow-up with at least a quart of either green smoothie or green juice with at least 1/2 pound (about 200+ grams) of greens. For snacks, I sometimes use large lettuce leaves for wraps and rolls. I eat some flax crackers with spinach pesto or seaweed pate. My sweet snack is a slice of sweet flax cracker with some nut butter and top with bananas and raspberries-the ultimate post workout snack! Lunch will either be smoothie or large salad (1/3 pound about 100 to 200 grams). Dinners have been green juice straight no fruits or veges (about another 200 grams) and then I add pineapple juice and drink right away. I tend to do really well on fruits. I still have yet to try green soups. I will find a good appealing recipe for tomorrow.
I'm spreading the word about JF. It's certainly will make one juicy and joyful!

Cheerios!

Joy xoxo

We Say Hip Hip Hooray!!

Personal Journal:

Yet another mellow, happy day of juice at our house today. Have I mentioned how much I LOVE citrus juice? Oh baby, I could drink a lake full of that liquid sunshine!

I have begun to make a point of journaling again and I am feeling such a sense of peace because of it. I love you dear blogging world, but there is something so much more revealing about the privacy of a black book and pen. I have been loving the hand written words as well, watching my thoughts appear on the page in ink.

Has it really been a whole month? Wow, congratulations to all who join us on Day 30!!! 92 Days looks like a breeze from here!

Have a beautiful Sunday evening!

With love and blessings,

Katrina and David

Global Juice Feast Day Twenty Nine!

I Love Spinach!!

Juice Feast Day 29

The Daily Juice Journal:

This morning we got up and made six quarts of GVJ with cilantro, parsley, cucumber, celery, bok choy, romaine, red leaf lettuce, carrot and ginger. We also made two quarts of orange and pineapple, and two quarts of orange, watermelon, lemon and cherry! You should see the color of this baby!

DAVID:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

Added to juices: MSM, bee pollen, Vitamineral Green, Spirulina, Hemp Oil, Kelp Granules, and maca.

Also taken: NCD, Vitalzym, MSM, Antioxidant Extreme, and water.

Rainoshek’s Daily Tips:

Bill Maher says “the answer is spinach” Add spinach to your juices, yum yum yum. John Heinerman says: “Worried about wrinkles? Try this Elixir” He also shares about this dark leafy green that Fran R., a midwife who has a practice based on a lifetime of experience, says that she recommends spinach and spinach juice to newly pregnant moms to help them minimize the risks attached to child birth. She has discovered that both spinach and its juice helps to reduce the incidence of birth defects and miscarriages dramatically. Fran says “All I know is that the spinach works. Those who take the spinach regularly have more normal births, less problems you know.” Fran recommends three to four helpings of spinach or 3 glasses of spinach juice a week “is what seems to do the trick in preventing them birth accidents.”

Spinach juice is also good for:
Anemia (it has adequate levels of iron which can help alleviate some of the problems associated with anemia),
Fatigue (after a woman’s period, her iron levels drop which can lead to fatigue. Spinach juice diluted with an equal amount of carrot or tomato will provide sufficient iron to boost women’s energy levels)
and Wrinkles! (OK, so this isn’t a juice to drink but see if you are inspired to give this Heinerman trick a try. Soak some cotton balls or a cotton cloth in spinach juice, and rub in a circular motion around the corners of the eyes, across the forehead, around the corners of the mouth, and down the chin. Do this for five minutes upon getting up in the morning and before retiring at night. Afterwards, rinse the face with cold water and then rub in some persimmon or pomegranate juice using the same technique. According to Heinerman, this procedure will help to tighten the skin and get rid of about 40-60% of existing wrinkles!)

Personal Journal:

I am so in love with my juices!! I love making them, the meditation of chopping, blending, squeezing, and then the glowing jars of vibrating juices, so alive with goodness. I love drinking them, and look forward to each swallow, I anticipate my juice with excitement!

I should let you know that yesterday wound down to being a difficult yet transformative day for both David and I. We wore brave faces until around 3 o’clock when we both admitted that the day was feeling very tough, and that we were both craving food like MAD! We both also had very powerful emotional breakthroughs and by night fall did not feel hungry any more, and felt at peace once again.

We received the news of a death of someone we both knew, a very beautiful and strong soul who had battled cancer for almost 9 years when he discovered Juice Feasting. He gave it a very dedicated effort last year, and two months ago, after almost 10 years of living with cancer, he passed away. We send his family our deepest blessings and love.

We came face to face with the fact that there is not always "the solution" for each and every one of us. Sometimes the solution is to love what is. We all come from different pathways, and our pathways all lead different directions, sometimes we have to embrace death and flow into that final walk of life.

I also had yet another transformation of my personal past, shedding layers one by one, they are falling away like gauze peeled away from a wound slowly healing, and almost ready to see the sunshine. Sometimes I think the layers are all gone, and I think indeed we do experience a freedom from layers at times as they get burned away in our brightest moments of joy and bliss. Then they seem to recover, and re-bury the gold of our pure heart again, calling for action to mindfully peal them away again, putting them aside.

It can be such a delicate balance of acknowledging the shadow and filling the mind with beautiful thoughts. On the one had we don’t want to bury the sadness by ignoring it and pushing it deeper, and we also don’t want to indulge the pain body by dwelling in thoughts that cause us pain. Sometimes I get lost in how to do it all, but it all seems to come out clean and sparkling in the end!! Oh happy day! I spent a good hour journaling last night, and find such amazing answers there in my black book. Not only cathartic, but my writing seems to take the tangle of thoughts and smooth them out into a nice even thread, like taking a mess of fleece and creating not only the spool of wool, but then weaving it into a beautiful tapestry!

I have also been re-inspired to get more intimate with my dumbbells, both by Terilynn and Tony Kay. Muscle is magical. For those of you worried about how your body is going to act post-Juice Feast please please get serious about exercise! I have never really been a serious as I could be about this important nutrient since going raw, and I think now is the time. Exercise is the golden key. As Happy Oasis says, we are “EXERCISEARIANS” and it is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself! Muscle is the tissue of youth, it burns calories, it is spiritual baby!

Have a beautiful evening dear juicies,

LOVE!!

Katrina and David Rain

And here are some Day 29 Photos, we are on the eve of our 1 month Juice Feasting anniversary!!

Happy Katrina about to have some juice.
MMMMmmmm the amazing orange, watermelon, lemon and cherry juice! (I just did a workout so I am allowed to have it with out greens...I think!)
I think I like it!
Want some?
It is really good!
OK, I'll drink it myself then!

Global Juice Feast Day Twenty Eight!

I Love Cucumber!!
Juice Feast Day 28

The Daily Juice Journal:

This morning we got up and made six quarts of GVJ with romaine, spinach, parsley, cilantro, kale, cucumber, celery, carrot, and yam. We also made four quarts of orange, pineapple and lime. Then we made 1 quart of grapefruit and garlic. Sounds kind of like yesterday doesn’t it? Yes, a lot like yesterday!

DAVID:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2.5 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5.5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2.5 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5.5 QUARTS

Added to juices: MSM, bee pollen, Vitamineral Green, Spirulina, Hemp Oil, Kelp Granules.

Also taken: NCD, Vitalzym, MSM, Antioxidant Extreme, and water.

Your Questions:

I have started the Global Juice Feast with all of you... and have really enjoyed it. I did not lose much weight at all... on day 23 I think I have lost something like 3 kg - 6 pounds. BUT... my period is missing, FIRST TIME EVER! And this is what scares me. My periods have always been so super regular!

I have been experiencing all the PMS syndroms... but no period... this scares me because it may be indicative that I am missing minerals and perhaps iron? Am I becoming anemic on the Juice Feast? Am I exhausing my body rather than helping it?
A few months prior to this feasting I did have a blood test - and my doc told me I was EXTREMELY low on ferritin. She prescribed me (synthetic) iron supplement - but I did not take it and I thought I can correct it with all the green juices and other iron rich raw vegan foods. I have been consuming A LOT of green juices every day. All done by the book.... so what it going on?

What am i to do with missing period?!?!?! What am I to do with the low iron ?!?!! Is my missing the period an indication that my ferritin levels are even lower and this is why my body is holding on to the iron reserve?

I have been feeling quite weak and tired while on this Juice Feast... none of all the great energy everyone is raving about ... and after work - when I want to be active and excercise... I feel exhausted and cannot do much more that to relax on my sofa...

Could it be that the Juice Feasting is not for me at this time of my life? Should I interrupt the feasting and start a modified Juice Feast which includes smoothies and salads, etc? What should I do on this Juice Feast to increase the iron levels...and I have been consuming A LOT of greens including spinach and kale and parsley & bunch of celery / day, etc...

Is Juice Feasting bad for me?

~Nettle

We Say:

Hello Nettle!

This is a common experience for women on a Juice Feast, and it can be quite disconcerting. For those of us who do not experience a complete disappearance of our period, we will often experience a shift in our cycle. Sometimes women will have heavier bleeding than usual due to the body using this time of month to detox as much a possible. Some women will have very short, light periods, for me this has been the case. Some women, like yourself, will miss their period all together.

In our experience this is all a part of cleansing, healing, re-building, and re-structuring your body. Every single one of us will respond differently to this process.

The biggest reason that women miss their cycle (besides being pregnant) is due to being underweight. The women's body says "if I don't have enough body mass to make a baby, I'm going to make sure that I'm not going to get pregnant" Any animal in the wild will not get pregnant unless there is enough food around to nourish a new, growing baby.

Other reasons for missing your moon can be vigorous exercise or athletic training, emotional stress, hormonal imbalances, malnourishment, if you are breast feeding, chronic illness, and/or thyroid imbalance.

We know of several women who have missed their period for times up to as long as five months, and then had it return once things balanced out again for them.

Other signs to watch for WHILE also missing your period that can signal a potential problem are hair loss, changes in vision, headaches, and breast secretions and/or milk production.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms along with the loss of your period, please consult your health professional.

You can also check out this article from www.mothernature.com to see if anything there resonates with you.

Nettle, because you have weight to loose rather than weight to gain, and because you have had test results showing low iron levels, it would be my guess that you are not absorbing the nutrients from your juices very well, and have most likely not been assimilating the nutrition from your food for a long time as well. This is also a very common problem that we encounter. Juice Feasting addresses all of these issues very well given time! Remember too that often with cleansing, things get worse before they get better!

Because we are not doctors, and we are also not working with you personally, we can’t answer your questions with certainty. Please do work with your health professional on these health challenges.

We can tell you that what you are describing could all be linked to poor assimilation of nutrients, and what is possibly behind the anemia and the period loss are one common underlying condition: poor HCl (Hydrochloric/stomach Acid) production by the parietal cells in your stomach.

Poor HCl production is common among westerners who have eaten a SAD or even cooked diet for many, many years, and part of the reason is because of low amounts of organic sodium - our main alkalinzing mineral - coming back into the system, and due to dehydration, which is important for proper HCl production. Also, we tend to dehydrate as we go more times around the sun, regardless of our cuisine and lifestyle (but a diet of water-rich foods helps immensely).

Good HCl is important for the digestion of protein. Your stomach acid should be at a pH of .5, and for many of us, it is not. A low HCl activates pesinogen enzymes, which break down protein chains into amino acids so they can be re-linked and used by your body. If you do not have good HCl, this digestive process done by the pepsinogen enzymes activated by the HCl will not occur, and you get poor protein assmiliation.

Iron assimilation is also linked to HCl production. Victoria Boutenko writes in Green for Life:

"Most minerals, including such important ones as Zinc, Iron, Calcium and the B-Complex vitamins (folic acid and others) need certain amounts of stomach acid in order to be absorbed at all. Without stomach acid, nutritional deficiencies inevitably develop leading to disease."

Please consider beginning to supplement with HCl. One place I know you can get an excellent supplement is the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center Dispensary. Go to www.treeoflife.nu, find their number and ask for the dispensary. You will want to get Quantum HCl and Quantum HCl Activator by Premier Research Labs. Or go to your local health food store and get an HCl supplement, and use as directed with your meals.

I don’t imagine that it is the low fat that is causing your challenges, but rather a poor assimilation of nutrition.

I hope this helps! With love and peaceful steps!!

Personal Journal:

Hello, hello!

The days are all flowing into one another here in Patagonia. I can’t believe it is Friday already! Each day holds similar yet radically different moments, complete with butterflies, lavender blooms, poppies at the road side, skin turning slowly more and more golden in the sunshine, a subtle yet significant shift in body, mind, and spirit occurring every day.

I can’t even quite say today what exactly is shifting, but I know I feel better and better in my body every day, my eyes are clear and see things in sharp focus, my sense of smell makes me feel like I must be a dog not a person, my skin has me returning to it again and again just to make sure I wasn’t imagining its softness, my breath tastes sweet and sweat smells yummy. It is so nice being a natural human! I want to leap into the Matrix and say “Humans don’t stink! We smell really scrummy!”

My weight has remained quite the same since beginning on March 1st. In total I have dropped between 4 and 5 pounds, and then I will go back up again! But what I do notice is that my shape is shifting, and I feel my body is simply doing a trade of old cake and bread cells for orange and spinach cells! Things are firming up, to put it another way. I have decided to be happy about this, as it means that I am assimilating much of the lovely nutrition from my juices, and that my digestive system is doing its job! I am maintaining a healthy body weight on juices.

Enemas? Not as often anymore. I am still doing them 2 out of three days or so, David not so often. Today I have gone twice without any prompting. If you still have weight to loose, go ahead and continue with the enemas, they will help you body to move stuff along much faster!

Do you have your BreakStone Tea and coffee for coffee enemas ready for Day 30?? We are going to start some liver cleansing darling!! More on that to come….

Happy juicing,

With love and hugs,

Katrina and David Rain

Personal Journal:

Yet another amazing sunny day in AZ. It is really nice to be home, back in our Juice Feasting kitchen with our friend Seneca the super cat. I have really been loving making juice, and get so much satisfaction out of filling our fridge with the days juice in a snap (well, an hour isn’t really a snap, but it is less time than I usually spend in preparing food and cleaning up the kitchen when we are eating) I remember the first time I made juice using the Vitamix it took me SO LONG! I was making green juice for the fasters at the Tree Of Life while I was doing my apprenticeship in the café and it felt awkward, slow and silly. Then, I saw Michella (head chef at TOL café) doing it and I realized that there was a whole different side to this juice making, it was graceful, fast, and smart. I now feel that way when making juice, it is a skill like any other: we gain grace with it after practice.

Have a wonderful evening!

All love,

I Love California!
Juice Feast Day 26

The Daily Juice Journal:

We made grapefruit garlic juice for the first time while on this Juice Feast today! Yum yum! Sounds yuck I know, you have to try it for yourself. We both realized last night that we were craving garlic, so we took care of that today. We also made orange, pineapple, and blueberry which is an OMG purple experience!

Personal Journal:

Hello Dear Friends!

How is everyone doing! I am slowly catching up with everyone’s blogs today and I am reading such wonderful stories of juicy adventures…

I did try to write while we were gone, I really did, but the days were jam packed, and my elderly old Mac just didn’t quite have the ability to pick up the WiFi signals where we were staying. There were just too many other exciting things going on!

So much to report, how can I fit it all in? We had an amazing trip, beginning with Wednesday in Tucson, finding a second hand dress for $32 (Buffalo Exchange I love you) and getting other random chores done. I felt more relaxed in the city than ever, contrary to my expectations! We slept in a hotel at the side of the I-10, woke up really early and made our juice for the drive to LA in 45 minutes (now that is speedy!) and went to pick up Cori Brackett who rode with us across the hills and open skies of Arizona and southern California, filled at this time of year with the most amazing swaths of wild flowers.

Wildflowers by the highway.

We arrived in LA around 4 on Thursday, and what glee, not a sign of pollution poisoning for David. We both felt relaxed and peaceful after the 9 hour drive and the city looked beautiful and miraculous to us! Filled with color and ideas, action and sunlight. I suffered much more thinking about what it would be like to Juice Feast while on the road and in a big city than the whole trip called for. It truly was a breeze.

We arrived at our hotel room after dropping Cori off in a trendy little part of Hollywood where it was dripping with hip, and cruiser bikes drifted along with the cars carrying kids with converse sneakers, jeans and lacy tops, looking through sunglasses that made them look like bugs. You can feel the ocean in the air.

Our home for the weekend was right downtown LA which was amazingly quiet, in a sea of sky scrapers, up on the 8th floor where we had a view and access to the sunshine. A clean old building where people live and stay for a time, an old boarding house. We set up our juicer right away and made a bunch of orange juice to celebrate.

On Friday morning we had the gift of juice delivery! As I mentioned earlier, we were blessed to be sponsored by Izo Cleanze while we were in LA. This meant that every morning we found a gallon of amazing, fresh, organic juice along with purifying teas, lemonade with cayenne, and other goodies waiting for us in a beautiful blue cooler shoulder bag, perfect for carrying around with you to work, or a film festival! Tim, WE LOVE YOU!! If you are in LA, or planning on going to LA, and want to juice, check them out!

We also had the joy of being joined by Victoria Boutenko, who shared a room with us for the rest of the festival. We enjoyed her company very much, and she immediately felt like family. Now we love her even more than we did through her books!!

The rest of Friday was spend finding a Tux for David, getting some produce (we tend to drink more than a gallon a day, and added in some citrus juices to our beautiful Izo red and green juices), and then it was off to the first night of the Raw Lifestyle Film Festival!

The whole weekend was wonderful, and we saw many inspiring films, including You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay, Sweet Misery by Cori Brackett, Reversing the Irreversible by Valya Boutenko, All Jacked Up by Jennifer Mattox and Douglas Clemons, and more.

Sunday night ended with the Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony with yours truly as the MCs and we had a lot of fun. It was perfect to be Juice Feasting for this, as we didn’t have to sit down and eat, but just kept right on juicing! I think a few of the high lights for me was seeing Victoras Kulvinskas awarding an award while in the full lotus position, holding himself up off the ground with his two hands, and Happy Oasis awarding an award while doing pushups, with the mike on the floor. Dorit really had an abundant evening planned, with live music, speeches, awards, dancing, and without even getting to the whole program we still finished up after midnight!

Victoras the yogi.

We ended up staying up till 3 am visiting with Victoria, and got up 4 hours later feeling refreshed and well rested. Oh the joys of juice and raw foods! After packing up all of our juicing gear, we headed off to LAX to drop Victoria off, and then we headed south to the beach. I had never driven south of LA and so I got to see the sights of Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, and on to San Onofre Beach where we lay naked in the sunshine and swam in the sea and drank our juice. What a beautiful afternoon.

We spent the later part of the day looking for and collecting veggie oil for the trip back home, and then started out in the setting sun through San Diego and on East along the number 8. We stopped just outside of Calexico (one of my favorite bands as well as a border town) for the night in a desert town surrounded by agriculture and dust. On Tuesday morning we woke up and made juice with what produce we had left, all fruit juice with watermelon, lemon and celery juice, orange, grapefruit and pineapple juice, and apple, ginger and pineapple juice. We also had some young coconuts that began the day. Amazingly we both felt fine on just fruit juice for the day, it must have been all the sunshine!

There you have it, we arrived home last night after stopping in Tucson for groceries happy, healthy, and juicy!

I would like to note that for me, thinking about Juice Feasting around food was far more difficult that actually Juice Feasting around food. I found myself enjoying the smells and looks of food, but did not in any way want to eat it, no problem! I was so happy to discover this. I was also happy to discover that instead of feeling more sensitive in the city, both David and I felt more at peace with it while Juice Feasting. We are now fully in the flow baby!
How did we Juice Feast while on a road trip? We brought three big coolers with us, one for our daily juice, and two for produce. We also brought along our Vitamix, nut mylk bag, and the Breville Juice Fountain. In a box, we took our Green Superfoods, bee pollen, MSM, and other goodies. In the morning we would make juice in our hotel room, which was easy as pie, done on the bathroom counter or little room table. Then we would fill the cooler with ice from the hotel, and we had a cooler full of juice for the day. We also once stopped at a Jamba Juice for fresh squeezed orange juice. It was really much easier than eating on a road trip, an hour in the morning and you don’t have to think about it again! Just reach into the cooler for your juice! Wonderful.

We will be working on our daily videos again soon, so keep an eye out for that. Thank you all for your words of encouragement and for letting us know you appreciate them! We appreciate you!!

We didn’t get many photos, but here are a few for kicks:
David on the way to LA with some wildflowers for company.
An LA Rubber Tree with flowers.
David drinking his Izo Juice on the Rubber Tree.
San Onofre Beach.
Happy Katrina knees at the beach.
A message from the cliffs of San Onofre.
Home again, home again, juicity juice!

See you tomorrow!

Global Juice Feast Day Eighteen!

I Love Bees, Flowers, and Pollen!!
Juice Feast Day 18

The Daily Juice Journal:

We have gone back to using our Vitamix for green juice, after a very honest attempt at using the lovely Hippocrates Green Star for three days running. A great little juicer, but when you are trying to make 6 quarts of GVJ in an hour, it just didn’t quite make it. And then there was the clean up time! Phew! This morning we happily made 7 quarts of GVJ, and 4 quarts of citrus juice in less than an hour! That is 5.5 quarts of juice each, wonderful. Nice to have you back in the game dear Vitamix.

DAVID:

TOTAL JUICE: 5.5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

TOTAL JUICE: 5.5 QUARTS

Personal Journal:

Woke up feeling so peaceful and energized today, and that feeling has persisted throughout the day. I had been experiencing some JLA (Juice Lack Anxiety) over the past few days, as we have run low on produce, made juices that I wasn’t really enjoying, and didn’t have enough produce in the morning to make all of our juices for the day. This morning it was such a good feeling to put 11 quarts of juice in the fridge, and to drink my first quart of GVJ to find that it tasted like yummy milk of the earth. Blissfully yummy juice.

I have also realized that I need to stop drinking straight fruit juice. I knew it all along, but couldn’t seem to resist it. BUT, it has been throwing my blood sugar off, causing me to feel dehydrated and hungry and in general making me feel lower energy. So, from now on I am a GREEN MACHINE!! I will make sure to add some green to each and every fruit juice and see if I can get my energy to balance out a bit. I am still having low days, then high days, which is due to the nature of cleansing as well, but I am ready at this point to come back to balance.

I am feeling quite joyful about the fact that layers are being shed, as I realize I do not always need to eat to feel satisfied, to feel feed, and to feel alive! Becoming more intimate with the SOURCE as we clear away those things we felt dependant upon for our sense of self.

We are getting all packed up for our trip to the big city! We are going to head into Tucson early tomorrow morning to spend the day there harvesting vegetable oil for our winged horse Pegasus the vegetable oil truck, getting a dress for me to wear for the Gala Dinner on Sunday night, and doing other little city jobs. Then, Thursday morning we will head across the land toward the SEA!! I can’t wait to see her dear, stormy blue grey face again, beloved ocean my love. When I was a child I used to dip my toes in the ocean and realize that I was connecting to all things through out all time. Everything flows to the sea. In my young mind I thought to myself, my Grandfather peed, and his pee in the end would have ended up in the ocean, so right now my toes are in the same water that was once in my Grandfather who was now no longer alive. It made me feel so happy and peaceful, and I realized that there is never any true loss. We are always all right here!

It has felt like that for me today, dipping my toes in the moment, connected to all, swimming in love. I feel so drippy I could be sappy, but it feels so strong it can’t be anything close to Suzy Cream Cheese, but instead like a great giant Cedar Tree, rooted in the ground and reaching for the stars.

I will do my best to write and let you know how the road tripping goes, and how staying juicy in the city works out for these two country mice. I will have to polish up my muddy clogs, shake out the moss from my hair, and brush the twigs from my pant legs. I will take a giant lung full of fresh, mountain air, and bring it to the city to share with everyone!

Sweet Dreams and happy juicing!

Katrina and David

Global Juice Feast Day Seventeen!

I Love Growing Things! (and I Love David!) My dream husband in my dream greenhouse.
Juice Feast Day 17

The Daily Juice Journal:

DAVID:

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

Keeping it simple on the Daily Juice Journal. We seem to be having the same juices every day, so unless that changes, I will let you know what our total juices for the day are! We have daily been making 6 quarts of GVJ most of the time with the following: romaine, spinach, kale, cucumber, celery, parsley, cilantro, carrot, yam, apple and basil. Then we also have 4 quarts of fruit juice, making it around 5 quarts of juice each!! I have been feeling REALLY hungry, and like I need lots of juice, so sometimes I’ll make an extra quart or so of my favorite tomato juice, which David does not like so I get to indulge in the whole thing!!

We are also adding in Vitamineral Green, Spirulina, Chlorella, Vitamineral Earth, Hemp Oil, Bee Pollen, Kelp, and once in awhile a pinch of Himalayan sea salt.

Our supplements have been sporadic, accept for MSM which we do every morning, but we have also been getting in Zeolites, Max Stress B, Vitalzym, Phenalmin, and sunlight ☺ when we remember.

Your Questions:

Hi David and Katrina,

Thank you for making the GJF possible and for all your inspiring videos. Watching you both is the highlight of my day!

I have a question about coffee enemas. I have been on the GJF since March 1 and have been looking through the info on liver cleansing. If you do coffee enemas, do you have to also drink something like psyllium and bentonite shakes to get the toxins out of the bowel, as it says in the Gerson Therapy information? Or can you just put the coffee in and let it out again after the time suggested, like an ordinary enema? I am in the UK and can't find anyone selling the Intestinal Drawing Formula.

Thanks again. I'm really enjoying the GJF and all the great people on here.

Love Christine xx

We Say:

Hello Christine!

We are so glad you are enjoying the videos! The have been a blast for us to put together.

Because of all the green juice you are doing on the Juice Feast, you don’t need to do the psyllium and bentonite shakes when you do your coffee enema. Of course, you can if you want to, but it is not necessary. Yes, you can just put the coffee into your kit and use it like a regular enema, hold it for 10-15 minutes, and then release.

For the rest reading, we add in coffee enemas on Day 30, along with the use of Chanca Piedra aka Breakstone Tea to further cleanse the liver and gallbladder! More to come on this later.

Another Question:

Hi David and Katrina, can you tell me is it normal to lose a lot of hair on a juice feast? I have done 14 days juice feasting and have now stopped as I was getting a little fearful over the amount of extra hair I was losing. Am I missing something or is this normal? Thanks and keep up the great work, Rachel

We Say:

Hello Rachel!!

Here is what we know about hair loss and Juice Feasting and/or transitioning to a live food diet. We know that people may loose hair when they move to a plant based diet at first due to the change in protein source. If your body has been used to getting its protein from animal products, until it re-leans to use the protein in plants you may experience hair loss. Your body is adapting to a new source of protein. This is very common among people moving towards a plant based diet. David lost loads of hair in the first two months of eating raw foods, and he now has a beautiful, full head of hair.

If you are overly concerned about it, please consult your health care professional to omit any chance that your hair loss if for another reason that needs to be addressed.

Personal Journal:

The temperature has dropped quite suddenly here in Patagonia. Just the other day I was out in shorts and a tank top, flip flops and all, and today we had hail and it is COLD!! Winter’s last love note perhaps?

We will be driving out to LA for the Raw Lifestyle Film Festival at the end of the week, and in preparation for the thick smoke, smoggy city we went to the Tree today to stock up on vitamin C (Pure Radiance C, a food based vit C) and some Antioxidant Extreme. Last time we were in LA David experienced pretty tough pollution poisoning (he could hardly breath for about six hours, until we got far enough out of the city), and so we are going to do our best this time to have him covered. It will be interesting though, he will most likely be even more sensitive to the air quality while on a Juice Feast. We are keeping our fingers crossed for relatively clear skies while we are there!

I am really excited about going, it will be so nice to see everyone, and if we weren’t Juice Feasting I would be really excited about all the Raw Food Restaurants in the area! As it is, we are very blessed to be “sponsored” by Izo Cleanse, and Tim is going to supply these two Global Juice Feasters with their Juice Feasting juice while we are in LA. Thank you Tim! We will let you know what the Izo experience is like.

Penni asked the other day if we have a place to grow things. Excellent question, and we really wish we could say “YES!!!” We do plan on growing things in pots as the weather warms up, a little kitchen herb garden, and I would really love to have pots and pots of tomatoes. I had a big garden before I came to Arizona and I do miss it very much. One of the main reasons that we will not be putting down roots here is that we want to homestead one of these days soon, raw homesteading is one of our biggest dreams! The terrain here is just not quite right for it, it is very rocky soil that does well with grasses and cactus, beautiful, beautiful high mountain desert but not quite the lush farm land we have in our dreams. Fruit trees get sunburned here, and I know there is an apple orchard somewhere in my future!! Where? That has yet to be seen, but I know the place is out there right now, just waiting for us to come and love it, have babies, plant trees, grow a big garden, and kiss the earth with our bare feet!

Juicy love,

Katrina and David

Rainoshek’s Daily Tips:

Have a beautiful, blissful, juicy and loving Sunday!!

Personal Journal:

We just saw a bobcat wandering very aware, very relaxed, across our front terrace. It was breath taking, neither of us has ever seen a bobcat, and this was truly a gift. Amazing things happen when you drink juice!! We have had coyotes, road runners, but never a bobcat!! He was SO beautiful, you should have seen David, he was nearly out of his skin with excitement!

We are both feeling awesome today. We got up, made juice, had a great visit with Frank, and have spent the rest of the day so far playing, just as we do every day. It is a good thing we play everyday, otherwise we would need a day off eventually LOL!! Ahh, it will come.

Want to meet some of my glorious family? Check out the 3rd weekly Juice-Luck video from Day 15 in Victoria B.C. and hear from my sister Heather about her 10 Day Juice Feast, my White Wizard Papa about being on Day 15, his girlfriend Constanze tells about the joys of garlic, lime and cilantro, and my sister Finnerty shares what it is like to have both parents Juice Feasting!! Rainoshek’s Daily Tips:

Feeling cold? For those of you on Day 15 along with us, you may be over the cold phase, but for those of you who are not or who have started later than us, here is a little tip to warming up!!

We often feel chilled on a cleanse as our energy is channeled to healing. This usually shifts after the first few weeks, and your body’s temperature will begin to regulate as you become a fine tuned machine! We just heard from someone who was FREEEEEZING when she began her Feast, and she is now finding herself nice and toasty warm, even at work where she previously always felt chilled. This is so nice to hear!!

But, while you are still finding yourself shivering away, please do keep bundled up, use ginger, cayenne, hot showers, warm baths, jumping jacks, sit next to a heater, and drink you water and juices at room temperature.

AND (here comes the tip) try acupuncture!! I just spoke with my Juice Feasting friend Naomi in Montreal, where it is still snowy, cold and shivery, and she found that having an acupuncture session worked wonders for her frigid condition. She has always had trouble staying warm, and so she was really excited to report that she has been able to stay cozy while Feasting in the snow. Apparently, acupuncture will help to open up your energy channels, allowing stagnant energy to flow, better facilitating both your healing and your cozy cozy body.

Ask your acupuncturest beforehand if they have any tricks for keeping the energy flowing and facilitating body heat.

SIDE NOTE: I have a really cute story about being COZY!! The first time David and I went to Café Gratitude in San Francisco, it was late in the day and we had been walking around the city all day. I got chilled during the day, and was sitting there all chilly when the waitress arrived with our round of drinks. She gave a huge, radiant smile and said “YOU ARE COZY” I kind of sat up straighter in my seat and said “I am?!!!” Amazingly, I felt cozier than I had before she said it. It became immediately clear that she was offering me my drink, an “I am cozy” Order a “I am beautiful” and the waitress will arrive at your table saying “You are beautiful!!!”

I love that place!!

Your Questions:

Could you please post the Tomato "Soup" recipe with the basil? I wrote it down but missed a few ingredients.
Thanks!
Lisa aka Pixywinks

We Say:

‘Mato Baby Juice
(I was called ‘mato baby when I was little, because I loved tomatoes SO much. Still do)

8-10 Big tomatoes
1 bunch basil
1 bunch cilantro
1 lime
2-4 cloves garlic

‘Mato Baby Green Juice

8-10 Big tomatoes
1 big bunch spinach
1 bunch basil
1 bunch cilantro
1 bunch parsley
1-2 limes
2-4 cloves garlic

also really yummy with a pinch of Himalayan crystal salt or Celtic sea salt.

According to John Heinerman, “my own personal observations over two decades with hundreds of liver cases that I’ve consulted, nothing works better for improving the health and state of the liver promptly than does ordinary tomato juice! It is, quite literally, a bugle call to awaken the liver from any lethargy it might be in. “ Do remember that tomatoes, being night shades, affect some conditions negatively such as arthritis and psoriasis.

Tomato juice is good for: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fatigue, Hypoglycemia, Yeast Infection. All of these health problems have one thing in common – they drain the body’s energy reserves and leave it mostly in a weakened state. Tomato juice with a pinch of cayenne pepper, well stirred, will revitalize the liver and adrenal glands within half-an-hour and prove a feeling of vitality which should last for several hours. ~Heinerman’s Encyclopedia of Healing Juices

I find this really interesting, as I am CRAVING tomato juice right now and I also just heard that we store anger towards our fathers in our liver! Hmmmm, Papa if you are reading this, please know how much I love you, but I do have some childhood and adolescent angers stored in my liver perhaps? Another thing of note is that I have been thinking of my liver a lot lately, especially when I am feeling emotional…then I heard that father anger is stored in the liver, now I hear tomato is healing for the liver!! Such wonderful things this Juice Feast is doing!! I am smiling in my liver just thinking about it!

Personal Journal:

Just another day with green giant looooove! We sat down together and had our breakfast juice at the table today, said our meal prayer over our juice, and enjoyed it very much. We should do that more often. Both of us feeling strong today, and I have not been feeling hungry at all these past few days. I attribute it to drinking enough water, and I think I was mostly just thirsty on the days I felt so hungry.

Well, we ended up needing to go get more produce today despite our bulk order. I actually enjoyed the excuse to go into town, seeing Annie and Barry at Red Mountain, going to the Post Office for mail, up to the Tree of Life Café for water, dropping off recycling, the leisure of small, quiet towns is so wonderful! We didn’t need more greens, just citrus. We have both been adoring our citrus juice at the moment, and can’t imagine going even a day with out it. I also got some more tomatoes, basil, and cilantro to make my amazingly yum tomato juice!!

We got to chat over Skype with my mom today, and she is on Day 3 of a Juice Feast!! Hooray for Ma Rineke!!

I hope that everyone had a blissfully juicy Saturday!!

See you tomorrow,

With love,

Katrina and David
